After getting the pre order I saw that a friend on Facebook had reviewed the album and felt that overall he had hit the nail on the head for each track. He's done reviews before and personally I think he's damn good at it. If you are a Twiztid fan do not sleep on this EP. With that being said... On with Charles's review. --Big Irish
Twiztid has been going strong for over 15 years now as a duo. "A New Nightmare" marks their first independent album since leaving Psychopathic Records. Taking into account their previous group (House of Krazees), this also marks to be their first independent release since HOK's Head Trauma. There has been MUCH hype and anticipation for this album after their 2012 release, Abominationz. Does it stand strong as a follow-up? All I can give you is my opinion. Now lets listen, shall we?
Wake Me Up (Intro) - Your standard album intro with not much of a purpose to serve but to get your ready for what you are about to hear. That being said, it will not get a rating because there just isn't much to judge.
Down With Us ft. Wrekonize - This track is an awesome start to an album. This song is basically asking "Who is still down with us?" Maybe people have questions and this song right here is Twiztid showing their acknowledgement to that. Here is an interesting quote from Monoxide, "Who gives it how you want it, when you need it? When the rest of them retreated, depleted and turned their backs on the people who really need it, I'm just stating the facts, you need to watch the shit you tat on your back". All speculations aside, song is DOPE. Beat is on point and The Demented Duo do what they do best. With Wrekonize singing on the chorus, it gives the song a nice flavor to it. Twiztid usually doesn't go the vocalist route for their hooks, and it's a nice and welcome change.9/10
Unjust Love ft. Mickey Avalon & Danny Boone - This is one of the singles for the album, many of us heard this a while back. And in all honesty, it had to grow on me. Twiztid is known for coming different on EVERY release, and this song show cases that to a T. The beat has a groove to it that really fits the creepiness this song eludes. This is a song that would probably be a favorite to a Live crowd. I can honesty say that I would never expect to hear Mickey Avalon on a Twiztid track, let alone the two names in close proximity. BUT, it fucking works! That's just the thing, you just cant expect anything from Twiztid, because they will always go left field to what you had in mind. This is an awesome track.7.5/10
The Deep End ft. Caskey- This song is a step down from the more upbeat tracks preceding it. The verses are really deep(pun). Madrox has always been able to hit emotions in me through his words that not many other artists can get out of me. Monoxide also comes with the deep(pun) shit. You can hear the frustrations they have been going through with this track. This song features a rapper by the name Caskey. I've heard Monoxide give him praises before in interviews, this is the first I've heard him and he impressed me. He fit in the song very well. The chorus is very hard hitting too.8/10
Sick Man ft. Blaze Ya Dead Homie - This track is another step on the creepy side. Only Twiztid can make me feel this filthy just listening to a song like this. Seems like Twiztid has been on their stalker shit lately with this song and Unjust Love kinda touching that subject. Speaking on "Stalker" this song gives me a feeling like Insane Clown Posse’s "The Stalker" did when listening to it, its like a modern version done better. This song isn't so much a sexual perversion (though it is talked about) as it is just an overall "sick in the head" perversion. The chorus gives me the chills due to this sickness. Blaze Ya Dead Homie is featured on the track and contributes well to the overall feel. 8.5/10
Screaming Out ft. Dominic & Irv Da Phenom - Another one of the singles released for this album, with a video attached to it. This song has a very hard hitting beat and Monoxide jumps in on the song with a fire under his ass. Madrox has this higher pitch to his voice than usual, which honestly was a little off putting the first few times listening to it, but that is just nit-picking, his verse is on point as well. Irv Da Phenom is featured on the third verse, it gives the song a bit more completion than what was provided in the promo video. The chorus has a featured vocalist once more, it still isn't too much my thing. The singing to it just fits, but doesn't at the same time. I cant really explain my gripes with it.7/10
Wasted ft. Blaze Ya Dead Homie, Bukshot, Lil Wyte, Jonny Richter, JellyRoll, Jahred of Hed Pe, Liquid Assassin and AJAX - What we have here folks, is a MONSTER collab with a bunch of the underground's best to offer. This is the "go to" song for getting turnt up and WASTED. This is your drinking, smoking, snorting, shooting, sipping, pill popping, mushroom tripping song. You get a little bit of everything in this cocktail of artists and drugs. Madrox SNAPS in this song with his fast flow. See how wasted you can get to this. The song is long as hell with the abundance of features, but I don't get bored with the versatile range of rappers on this track. The hook to this track is the type that you can expect everyone get hype to IF performed live. 7.5/10
Falling Down ft. Swollen Members - Another single for the album that was released exclusively on HipHopDX, who has been showing Twizitd TONS of love for this album. The track is another step down from the hype before it. Monoxide and Madrox are, in my opinion, some of the most versatile artists out there being able to make me laugh and cry withing minutes of each other. This song is a heart-felt one. Madchild goes hard in this song, he speaks on his poisonous past and overcoming that, which is very inspirational. Swollen Members and Twiztid should REALLY work together more often, them blend very well in this song. 8/10
Monstrostity ft. The R.O.C. (House of Krazees) - Oh sweet fucking shit. We ALL have been waiting for this moment. Since Twiztid announced their departure from Psychopathic, a lot of people smelled this not too far away. Speculations ran rampant and people were waiting for it. Tweets from Monoxide hinted on at least a new HOK track in the works. Does NOT disappoint in their delivery. The R.O.C. come hard as fuck in his verse and its a very welcome return to hear him on a track with Twiztid. I really hope more can come out of this. It IS the 20th anniversary of House Of Krazees this year, anything is possible. Until then, we got this BANGER to hold us HOK fiends off. 9/10
OVERALL - "A New Nightmare" is the classic Twiztid with new flavors swirled in the middle. As per usual, the overall sound is different from any previous release from the duo. It's labeled as a "mixtape" but in reality is more of an EP. That being said, you can't judge too hard. For me, it was short, but we still got a new Twiztid album less than a year separated from their previous release. I liked every track on it and LOVE a few of them. My favorites are "Down With Us", "Sick Man" and "Monstrosity". I give the project as a whole, a SOLID 8/10
